3 Things to Consider When Buying a House
Cost
Anyone that is looking to buy a home should first get pre-approved by a mortgage lender. It's importnat to know not only what you can afford, but also, what you are comfortable with. The lender can provide an estimate of what your monthly payment will look like and the amount of money needed, not only for the down payment, but also for any closing costs.
Also, you should calculate other costs to make sure you have enough funds to cover other things like:
- Renting a moving truck
- Hiring help to move furniture
- Deposits or fees for various utilities, internet, and cable services
- Paying a babysitter to watch the kids during the move
- Boarding pets during the move
- Additional money set aside for any cosmetic upgrades you will want to do immediately to the new house
All of these things can quickly add up to a lot of money.
Location
I cannot stress this enough. Location is KEY when purchasing what will most likely be your largest investment in your lifetime. Carefully consider these things:
- Neighborhood Desirability - How kept up are the neighbors' homes?
- Shopping, Schools, Amentities Nearby - Look at what is important to you
- Your Commute to Work - If you have to commute to work, it's beneficial to know what traffic is like, especially with the rise in gas prices.
Rmeember, you can always change the aesthetics of a house, but you cannot change it's location!
Trust Your Realtor
It's ESSENTIAL that you have a Realtor in your corner, working for YOU, not for themselves. Remember, as a buyer, you do not have to pay a penny to the Realtor you choose, but it is still pertinent to choose the right person, who will guide you through every step of the way, negotiate the best terms on your behalf, and who you can work with for a minimum of two or three months, if not longer.
